       When I arrived by boat at Para Lake in Yanggu carrying a bag of biscuits a

       fter passing through the 103rd Replenishment Unit in Chuncheon , instruct
       ors were waiting for me to come out of the unit to take over the troops .

       “ What do you see on that mountainside ?”

       “ I see a big , old tree !”



       Following the instructors' orders, we ran toward the old tree on the mount
       ainside . I ran with all my might when I heard that they would limit the nu

       mber to 10 on a first-come-first-served basis . I came in at the front an

       d was left behind in spirit , but the other recruits had to run and run and r
       un until their breath caught in their throats . That day we entered boot ca

       mp . Training began the next day without rest. The first day was formal tr
